Specie Information
Waterbuck

Specie Name :                     WATERBUCK

Scientific Name :                     Kobus ellipsiprymnus

Description :
Large stoutly built animal with woolly grey-brown coat.
A white circle around the rump gives it its nickname " kring-gat" .
White outlines around eyes and muzzle and a white band around the throat.

Horns:
                                      Males only.
Long and heavily ridged, they sweep outwards and back in a wide arc, curling slightly upward.

Mass:
Males 250 -270 kg, females smaller

Habitat :
Tall grass near trees or shrub and close to water.
In the dry season they may utilize riparian growth, but in the rainy season they graze further from water, even in hills.

Behavior :
Breeding herds of 5 - 20, bachelor herds and territorial bulls.
Fed mainly on grass and drink regularly.
                                      May sometimes graze in water.
Give birth throughout the year, but mainly in summer, after 9 months gestation.
                                      The calf remains concealed.

Hunt Method :
This is a strong and tough animal and, although not aggressive, is not above asserting itself.
It sometimes flees into water, seemingly without fear of crocodiles.
It has an unpleasant turpentine smell and contact between the meat and the oily coat should be avoided.
The smell may even lead you to it if the wind is favourable, but you won't be wild about the venison.
